What to expect at Karnak Temple Complex

Karnak is not one temple but a city of temples built and rebuilt by roughly 30 pharaohs over two millennia. The main precinct honors Amun-Ra, and everything here is oversized: a 3 km processional axis once linked it to Luxor Temple, ram-headed sphinxes still flank the entry, and the Great Hypostyle Hall crowds 134 sandstone columns into a forest so dense the roof once blocked out the sun. Serious Egyptology fans need a full morning; most travelers spend 3-4 hours and still miss half of it.

Arrive at opening time (6:00) to beat both the heat and the tour-bus wave that hits around 9:00. Enter via the first pylon, walk the central axis to orient yourself, then double back to the Sacred Lake and the Open-Air Museum (separate small fee). Guides at the gate charge around $15-20 for a 90-minute tour and are worth it — otherwise carry a good map, because signage is thin. Bring more water than you think you need.
