Why people stay in East Bank

The East Bank is the working half of Luxor: banks, the train station, the ferry landing at Al-Mahatta, and the long Corniche that runs from Luxor Temple past the Winter Palace down to the Sonesta St George. This is where you actually live during a trip — laundry gets done on Television Street, breakfast happens at Sofra or Aboudi's, and the calèche drivers hustle you every twenty metres along Sharia al-Mahatta. It's noisy, it's dusty, and by 9pm the Corniche is full of families eating ice cream at Twinky.

Skip the East Bank only if you’ve come for a silent retreat — everyone else should base here. The advantage is real: you can walk to Luxor Temple after dark when it's lit up (open till 9pm), grab a $2 ferry to the tombs in the morning, and be back for a Stella at the Metropolitan Café by sunset. Downside is the constant low-level hassle from touts near the temple entrance and the caleche stand. Ignore, keep walking, don’t make eye contact.

Best streets are Sharia Khaled Ibn al-Walid south of the Winter Palace (mid-range Nile-view hotels, $60-$120) and the lanes around Sharia Yousef Hassan behind the souq (cheaper guesthouses, $20-$40). Nile-view rooms at the Sonesta St George or Steigenberger Nile Palace run $130-$200. Avoid rooms directly on Sharia al-Mahatta — trains and calèche horses will wake you at 5am. The stretch immediately behind the train station is grubby and not worth the saving.

From Luxor International Airport, a taxi to the East Bank runs $10-$15 and takes 20 minutes — agree the fare before getting in. The train from Cairo (about 10 hours, sleeper $80, day train $15-$30) arrives at Luxor station on Sharia al-Mahatta, five minutes walk from the Corniche. Inside the area, everything is walkable; calèches cost $5-$10 for a Corniche ride if you bargain hard. Uber does not operate — use Careem or agree taxi fares in advance.
