Why people stay in Corniche al-Nil
The Corniche is a two-kilometre riverfront strip stretching from the Sonesta St George at the north end down past the Winter Palace, Luxor Temple and the ferry landing, ending near the Iberotel south of the city. This is postcard Luxor: horses and calèches lined up, felucca captains offering sunset sails, Nile cruisers moored three-deep, and the West Bank's Theban hills glowing across the water. It's also the most touristed strip in Upper Egypt and everyone in a uniform will want a tip.
Base here if you want a Nile view from your balcony and don’t mind paying for it — most rooms with a real view start at $100 and climb hard. The Old Winter Palace, where Howard Carter announced the Tutankhamun discovery in 1922, is a splurge at $250+ but still probably the most atmospheric hotel in Egypt. Skip the strip if you’re travelling light and cheap — everything on the Corniche is priced for a Nile view, whether or not your room actually has one.
Sonesta St George and Steigenberger Nile Palace at the north end, Winter Palace (Old and New wings) in the middle, Iberotel and Pavillon Winter at the south end — that's the four-and-five-star lineup, $100-$300. Insist on a Nile-view room in writing before you pay; garden-view and city-view are half the price of the same room facing water and they will absolutely try to give you one. Avoid the rebranded older places on the Corniche's back side — you pay Corniche prices for a car-park view.

Getting around Corniche al-Nil
From Luxor Airport, direct taxi to any Corniche hotel is $10-$15 and around 20 minutes. The train station is a 10-minute walk from the middle of the Corniche via Sharia al-Mahatta. Along the Corniche itself, walking is best — nothing is more than 25 minutes end to end. Calèches will offer a ride at $10 opening price; walk away and they drop to $3-$5.
Questions about Corniche al-Nil
For four-star comfort with a genuine river-view room, the Sonesta St George at $130-$170 outperforms the newer Steigenberger. For atmosphere over amenities, the Old Winter Palace is unbeatable but expect creaky plumbing along with the history.
