The Corniche (Nile-view classic)

This is the strip north and south of Luxor Temple along the river. Sofitel Winter Palace ($200-450), Steigenberger Nile Palace ($130-190), Sonesta St George ($100-150) and Iberotel Luxor ($90-130) all sit here. You pay for the Nile view and walkable access to Luxor Temple, the museums and the ferry landing. Best for first-timers and anyone with mobility concerns.

The souq quarter (budget and boutique)

Behind Luxor Temple around Sharia al-Mahatta and Sharia Youssef Hassan. Nefertiti Hotel ($20-35), Bob Marley Peace Hotel ($15-25) and Nour el-Balad guesthouse ($40) are here, plus the excellent mid-range Al Moudira sister property Villa Nakhla ($90). Rooftops with temple views, five-minute walks to the souq, and access to the cheapest food in town. Bring earplugs — the mosque call at 4:30am carries.

West Bank villages (atmosphere)

Across the river in the villages around Gezira, New Gurna and Dra Abu el-Naga. Al Moudira ($260-340) is the flagship — a domed mud-brick palace 15 minutes' drive from the ferry. Beit Sabée, Nour el-Gurna and Marsam Hotel run $40-90 with courtyard rooms and painter-in-residence charm. Wake up to donkeys, sugarcane and the sound of village life. Trade-off: getting to the East Bank is a $5 taxi or a 20-minute walk to the ferry.

Nile-view options beyond the Corniche

Hilton Luxor Resort ($140-200) sits 4km north on the East Bank with the best pool complex in the city and a spa; taxi in for temples. Jolie Ville Kings Island ($130-180) is on a Nile island 5km south, all-inclusive style, great for families with young kids who want the pool + temples split.
