Under $3: the classics

Koshari Sayed Hanafy (behind the souq): $2 for a bowl big enough to skip your next meal. Aboudi ful and ta’ameya cart on Sharia al-Mahatta: $0.50 for a sandwich, open from 6am. Any of the corner sugarcane pressers: $0.30 a glass. Bakery next to Luxor train station: fresh eish baladi at $0.10 a round.

$3-6: sit-down local

Al-Sahaby Lane Restaurant (upstairs, quiet street off Sharia al-Mahatta): grilled chicken half with rice and salad $6, cold beer available. Snack Time on Sharia Television: fuul, ta’ameya, shakshuka breakfasts $3-4. Chez Omar on the Corniche (south end): decent shawarma plate and fresh juice for $5. Sunflower Restaurant near the souq: pigeon and stuffed vegetables set menu $8.

$6-10: the small splurge

Sofra on Sharia Mohammed Farid: full Egyptian mezze spread with mains for $8-10 a head, no alcohol but exceptional food in a restored house. Aboudi in the Old Winter Palace hotel arcade: proper tea and cake for $4, or a light lunch for $8. 1886 lunch menu (Winter Palace): occasionally does a set lunch under $12 — check on arrival.

West Bank cheap eats

Restaurant Mohammed on Gezira village main road: Egyptian home cooking, four-course set dinner $8. Africa Restaurant near the ferry: quick shawarma and grills, $5-7. Nour el-Gurna guesthouse restaurant: open to non-guests, three-course $7.
