The Colossi of Memnon

Two 18m quartzite statues of Amenhotep III on the roadside as you enter the West Bank temple zone. Free, unfenced, no ticket. Behind them a modern excavation of the mortuary temple continues; you can walk 100m in for a look at the newer discoveries. Best light is 7-8am or after 4pm. Every West Bank taxi passes here, so ask to pause for 10 minutes.

The Corniche and the public ferry

The 3km riverside promenade from the Winter Palace north past the museums to Karnak is a free evening in itself — families, joggers, tea sellers, felucca captains. The public ferry across the Nile is technically $0.30 but functionally free and gives you a working-boat crossing with locals commuting to work with bicycles and groceries. Do it at sunset.

Villages and countryside on the West Bank

Rent a $3 bicycle from a Gezira guesthouse and ride the flat back lanes through Ba’irat and New Gurna. Sugarcane fields, mud-brick houses, kids waving from doorways, and the mountain rising behind. No entrance fees, no touts once you’re a kilometre off the temple road. The Country Garden estate near the sugarcane is free to wander if you buy a tea at the cafe.

Watching the balloons at dawn

If you don’t want to spend $80 on a flight, watch 20 balloons rise over the Theban hills from the East Bank Corniche around 6am. It's free, you’ll have coffee in your hand, and the photos are as good as being in the basket.

Is Karnak ever free?

No, but during Ramadan opening hours shift and the atmosphere before iftar with locals visiting is worth the $12.

Free museums in Luxor?

None currently. Luxor Museum is $10 and the Mummification Museum is $8 — both worth it.

Can I photograph the balloons from my hotel?

If your hotel is on the East Bank Corniche or has a west-facing roof, yes. Sofitel Winter Palace, Steigenberger and Iberotel all have roof access at dawn.

Any free entry days at temples?

Occasionally on Egyptian public holidays like Sinai Liberation Day (Apr 25). Check locally — announcements are last-minute.
