Where to sleep
Book the Sofitel Winter Palace's Pavillon wing for a Nile-view room from $220, or splurge on the Royal Wing garden suites at $450. On the West Bank, Al Moudira's domed suites ($260-340) with private terraces and a candlelit dinner in the courtyard are the alternative. Two nights East, one night West is the smart split — you get the temples and the village dawn.
How to see the sites
Hire a licensed Egyptologist through your hotel concierge or Djed Egypt Travel; expect $80-120 a day plus car. Buy the Premium Luxor Pass ($200) — you get Nefertari's tomb (otherwise $75 on its own), Seti I ($20), Tutankhamun ($15) and every other major site.
Do Valley of the Kings as a private early access at 5:45am (some operators arrange this for $150 extra), then Hatshepsut and Nefertari before lunch.
The upgraded extras worth paying for
The sunrise balloon in a premium basket ($150 with Sindbad's VIP option) is smoother and less cramped than the standard flight. A private dahabiya day-sail with lunch runs $200-300 for two through the Winter Palace jetty operators. And Sound & Light at Karnak in a private box after hours — arranged by concierge, around $80 a head — beats the standard show.
