Day trip to Dendera from Luxor

Dendera sits 65km north of Luxor and has the best-preserved painted ceiling of any Egyptian temple — a 90-minute drive each way and worth every hour.

Getting there

The easiest option is a private car with driver from your hotel: $40-60 return for the day, four hours on site. Shared taxi from the service depot behind Luxor train station is $4 each way but painful with luggage and slow. Skip the once-daily convoy — it stopped running years ago and the road is open to independent traffic.

Combine with Abydos (another 90 minutes north) for a long but complete day; add $30-40 to the car fare.

What to see at the temple

Entry is $10. The Temple of Hathor's Hypostyle Hall ceiling was restored between 2005 and 2019 and now shows the original blues, reds and golds. Climb to the roof for the New Year chapel and the Zodiac (a plaster copy — the original is in the Louvre). Descend to the crypts for the famous 'Dendera light' bas-reliefs. Give yourself two solid hours plus a walk around the outer sanatorium and sacred lake.

Practical notes

Bring a torch — the crypts are dim. Wear closed shoes; the stone stairs to the roof are worn. Food options at the site are one cafe by the gate; better to eat back in Qena or wait for Luxor. The site is included on the standard Luxor Pass.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

How long does the day take door to door?

Around 8 hours for Dendera alone, 11-12 hours combined with Abydos.

Is Dendera safer than it used to be?

Yes. Convoys ended around 2011 and the road through Qena is now normal tourist traffic.

Do I need a guide?

Signage is minimal. A guide ($50-70 for the day added to your car) triples what you’ll understand, especially in the crypts.

Best time of year to go?

November to March. Dendera's interior gets brutally hot in summer even at 8am.
