Day trip to Edfu from Luxor

The Temple of Horus at Edfu, 115km south of Luxor, is the most complete temple in Egypt — a full-day round trip and often combined with Kom Ombo.

Getting there

Private car with driver: $60-80 return, or $100-120 to include Kom Ombo another 60km on. The drive is 2 hours each way on the desert road. Second-class train from Luxor to Edfu is $2 and takes 2.5 hours but drops you 5km from the temple — add a tuk-tuk for $3.

Why Edfu is different

Entry $10. Because it was built late (237-57 BC, Ptolemaic) and buried under sand until the 1860s, Edfu has intact ceilings, doors that still swing, and inscriptions so clear you can read the ritual instructions. Look for the Feast of the Beautiful Reunion reliefs in the outer hypostyle hall, and the small treasury and library rooms flanking the sanctuary. Two hours minimum.

Combining with Kom Ombo

The double temple of Sobek and Horus at Kom Ombo sits right on the Nile and takes 60-90 minutes. Combined with Edfu it's a rewarding but long day (10-11 hours from Luxor). Bring water and lunch; the roadside cafes are basic.
